Aerial Yoga combines traditional mat yoga with postures (asanas) suspended in nylon fabric hammocks. With the help of gravity and the hammocks, we can explore floating, fluid movements and create space in our bodies without compressing our joints and spine.
This is a gentle, basic class with no flow between poses. A hatha class will likely be a slow-paced stretching class with some simple breathing exercises and perhaps seated meditation.
This is a good place to learn beginners’ poses, relaxation techniques, and become comfortable with yoga.
This is a style of yoga, in which movement is synchronized to the breath, and is a term that covers a broad range of yoga classes. This style is sometimes also called flow yoga, because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. The breath acts as an anchor to the movement as you to flow from one pose to the next in time with an inhale or an exhale.
Aerial Yoga Nidra
Yoga nidra is guided non-movement practice where participants lie in the hammock and are led through a series of awareness points, breathing exercises and visualizations. Yoga nidra encourages deep relaxation of the body leading to a release of physical, emotional and mental stress. Deep relaxation, like meditation, when practiced regularly not only relieves stress and anxiety, but also has been shown to improve mood.
What to bring… comfort is of upmost importance when practicing Yoga Nidra. If you tend to become cool when still, a blanket as a cover up. Wear comfortable non-binding clothing; with no zippers or buttons as with other aerial practices. Socks and an eye pillow may be helpful. If you would prefer to lie down on the floor for yoga nidra, please bring your mat.
